The United Nations Association of the United States of America is a not-for-profit membership organization dedicated to building understanding of and support for the ideals and vital work of the United Nations among the American people. Its educational and humanitarian campaigns, including teaching students in urban schools, clearing minefields and providing school-based support for children living in HIV/AIDS-affected communities in Africa, allow people to make a global impact at the local level. In addition, its policy and advocacy programs stress the importance of nations working together and the need for United States leadership in the United Nations. The association is affiliated with the World Federation of United Nations Associations.
Why Become a Member of UNA-USA?
To help build support for the United Nations among the American People
The mission, work, and purpose of the United Nations carried out through our local and regional events hosted by UNA-USA's chapters and divisions across the country. Without these educational events, misconceptions about the UN can persist. Policy begins with public opinion and UNA-USA works to inform and shape public opinion at the most fundamental level.
To help build support for the United Nations among Elected Officials
According to Former Ambassador to the UN, Richard Holbrooke, "The UN is only as good as the Us commitment," furthermore, "The UN cannot succeed if the US does not support it." Unfortunately, this commitment has fallen short at times in the form of late payments and the under funding of important efforts such as peacekeeping operations. Through our advocacy campaigns as well as through relationships with some of the country's top decision makers, we keep the pressure on to make sure that US support for the UN stays alive.
Other important facts that support UNA memberships are:
Demonstrating that the American people long for engagement.
Joining the UNA-USA means joining a community of like-minded individuals.
The educational programs run by UNA-USA develop global citizens.
UNA-USA publications offer a fresh perspective on world affairs.
UNA-USA offers vital experience for young professionals.
